Places to stop, explore and enjoy
Colyton has a collection of small gardens and green spaces that contribute greatly to the character of the town and provide places for residents and visitors to sit, walk and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
From the small gardens within the town to Hillhead and the Community Woodland, these spaces form an important part of Colyton's rural character.
Colyton's gardens
The Parish Council maintains four small gardens in Colyton for the enjoyment of residents. A part-time gardener helps care for the gardens, and volunteer help with keeping them tidy and free of weeds is always welcome.
St Andrew's Garden
Tucked away behind the Gerrard Arms, this small and secluded garden provides a peaceful place to stop and a particularly good view towards St Andrew's Church.
Bridge House Garden
Situated over Umborne Bridge beside the River Coly, Bridge House Garden has planted beds and a small summerhouse, providing a sunny riverside place to rest. For the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the garden was tidied and planted by Colyton and District Garden Society with trees, shrubs and plants in shades of yellow and gold.
Mr Baker's Garden
Below Colcombe Castle and opposite the public car park, this small garden is dedicated to the memory of Mr Baker, who owned the local tannery.
Govers Meadow Garden
Located where Govers Meadow joins Dolphin Street, this small garden provides a convenient place to rest close to the centre of town. The garden was given to the parish by the family of the late Mr Gover.
Hillhead Picnic Site
Set above Colyton at Hillhead, the picnic site provides a scenic place to stop, enjoy the countryside and take in the surroundings.
The Picnic Site is dedicated to the memory of Dr Maclean.

Colyton Community Woodland
Just below the picnic area lies a small, steep woodland established in 1994. Over the years the trees have matured and the woodland has developed into an attractive natural space for the community.
Further planting included Devon apple varieties and other trees to commemorate the Millennium. Parts of the site have also been managed with wildlife in mind, including areas intended to encourage butterflies.
Today the Community Woodland is a haven for wildlife and a rewarding place to wander after enjoying the picnic site.
Doctor's Stone
A memorial stone seat can be found along the Hillhead road near the Picnic Site. It provides a welcome resting place after the climb up Hillhead from Colyton.
Road Green
Road Green is an important open green space in Colyton, surrounded by mature trees and close to the River Coly.
With seating and picnic tables, it provides a pleasant informal recreation space for residents and families. The site also includes an enclosed children's play area.
Protecting our green spaces
Green spaces make an important contribution to the rural character, environment and quality of life of the parish. Several of Colyton's green spaces are formally designated as Local Green Spaces within the Colyton and Colyford Neighbourhood Plan.
These include Bridge House Garden, Colyton Community Woodland and Picnic Site, Road Green and Play Area, and St Andrew's Churchyard and St Andrew's Garden.
Help care for our green spaces
Volunteer help with keeping the Parish Council's gardens tidy and free from weeds is always welcome.
You can also contact the Parish Council if you need to report a problem with one of the spaces it maintains.
